Jessica Ghawi, known in sports journalism circles as Jessica Redfield, was a determined, hilarious, beautiful, intelligent sister, friend and daughter who lost her life July 20, 2012 in the tragic Aurora theater shootings.
Her dream was to be a hockey journalist, and she was close to achieving that, working as an intern for Altitude and the Fan covering the Colorado Avalanche.
November 27th would have been her 26th birthday. We're celebrating her memory and raising money for the JRG Foundation, a scholarship fund started by her mother and brother, to keep her dream alive by awarding a grant to a young woman with a dream of breaking into sports journalism.
The Avalanche are playing at home against the St. Louis Blues and they are donating a portion of ticket sales we make to the Foundation.
Afterwards, from 9 to 11 pm, Wynkoop Brewery in LoDo will be hosting an after party and are donating 20% of all food and drink sales (along with their sister restaurants in Denver, The Wazee Super Club (1600 15th St.), Gaetno's Italian (3760 Tejan St.), The Ale House at Atamo's (2501 16th St.) and Breckenridge Brewery Tasting Room (471 Kalamath St.)).
Some Avalanche players as well as NHL officials will be joining us at the after party as we auction off signed Avalanche gear and other local products with all proceeds going directly to the Foundation.
It'll be good food, good people, good hockey, all for a great cause!
