Past Events This year’s Stock Show and Rodeo was a huge success. January 14, 2007 was Canada Day at the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo. The evening began with a reception at the Northwest Club and the Traditional Roast Beef dinner followed by the World Famous Rodeo. Over 100 guests attended with the support of the Consulate General of Canada-Denver office, represented by Monica Heron, Senior Trade Commissioner, Kim O’Neil, Trade Commissioner, Agriculture as well as several staff members. We were also happy to host three Canadian cowboy contestants, the Editor of the Stockman, Grant Smith and his wife, Ivan Daines (O’ Canada anthem singer) and his wife. Thanks to all those who supported this year’s event. Recent donations made by the CCA were $1000.00 made to The Toy Wall Foundation (a non-profit organization providing toys and personal sports equipments to organizations that deal with underprivileged children), $1000.00 to 9Cares Colorado Shares, and $1000.00 to Mayerthorpe Fallen Four Memorial Society (memorial formed to honor four fallen RCMP officers). As many of you know, the Denver area lost one of its finest recently with the passing of Edmonton native Ron Brodeur. Ron was a huge supporter of CCA hosting the annual Grey Cup event at Boston’s Pizza. In addition, he served the community enthusiastically as a coach for the Littleton hockey league. Donations for Tracy, Connor and Carter can be made to: The Ron Brodeur Memorial Fund c/o City Wide Bank 10637 East Briarwood Circle Centennial, CO 80112 DIRECTORY We have had several of our members wishing to add information to the CCA Directory. There have been requests to add business information for networking opportunities. At CCA, we strive to help our Canadian counterparts be successful in their businesses. We are in the process of updating our CCA Directory. If you are interested in listing your business information please let Suzy Martinek know by email at shoogness@msn.com or include this information with your 2007 membership dues. We will be emailing a full distribution list of the updated Directory to our current members. MEMBERSHIP Please remember that annual dues are payable each January so we would appreciate everyone who has not already done so to send a check for $50.00 per family to *CCA, P.O. Presently, we are working on updating our information and events for the website. If you have pictures or information you would like to see on the CCA website please contact Suzy Martinek at shoogness@msn.com PRINTING: We would like to acknowledge and thank IKON Office Solutions Inc. through Bruce McQuat, for printing hard copies of the 49th Parallel free of charge. Although there are relatively few members who still prefer to receive the 49th Parallel via snail mail, this generosity saves a substantial amount each year. Those savings are then available to us for use in other beneficial ways. Thanks Bruce and IKON. CANADIAN HUMOUR Canadian American Translator Did you know? Poutine=Cheese Fries A Blue=A Bud Toque=Hat Tim Horton’s=Dunkin’ Donuts Peeler=Stripper A.A. Milne named Winnie the Pooh after a bear seen at the London Zoo—but the bear was not a Brit, it was a Canadian cub brought over by a veterinarian joining the Canadian Infantry Brigade during the First World War, who named it for his hometown of Winnipeg. 2,500,000--Number of Canadian television viewers who tuned in for the 1972 “Summit on Ice” hockey final between the Soviets and the Canadians, more than did for Neil Armstrong’s moon walk. 836—Average number of extra days lived by a Canadian, as opposed to an American. Bilingual is better. English and French, as national languages, make for interesting cereal boxes, lotion bottles, and billboards. And go the extra mile to actually pronounce French words in French (it’s foy-AY, not foyer). Calgary Redeye—drink made from beer and tomato juice. Garburator—invented by John Hammes in 1927. Disposal unit-hybrid of garbage and incinerator. Four-Pointer—A trade blanket used as a measurement for trading in furs. For a good Canadian laugh treat yourself to a viewing of Slap Shot or Strange Brew.
